Lecturers and other striking university staff have been asked to resume work even as negotiations into their demands continue.
Moi University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kosgey says there is a need for learning to resume in public universities while the union officials engage with the government and other stakeholders.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Wednesday, Prof. Kosgey commended the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Education Institutions and Allied Workers (KUDHEHIA) for suspending their strike and asked the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) to follow suit.
“We are glad KUDHEHIA have suspended their strike and are now back to work and we ask that those UASU and KUSU officials will also do the same soon,” he said.
“As a university, we are committed to addressing all our workers concerns and we ask that the union officials allow members back to work even as negotiations continue,” he added.
The VC further asked university students to remain patient even as relevant authorities work to bring to an end the industrial action that has paralyzed learning in all public universities across the country.
“I ask our students to remain calm and refrain from engaging in unproductive activities. The university environment is still conducive for them to remain there so there is no cause of the alarm,” he added.
University lecturers and other non-teaching staff have been on strike for the past six weeks demanding implementation of the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
