The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has been asked to ensure its silos in the North Rift region remain open round the clock so as to speed up the process of receiving maize being delivered by farmers.
Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren further wants NCPB to operate on weekends.
Speaking in Eldoret on Monday, Tiren said most of the farmers depend on the maize to pay for their children's fees and taking care of other family expenses.
"We are now into a new year and we want to ask that NCPB operates day and night even on weekdays so that the process of receiving the maize increases," said Tiren.
"This is the only source of income to our farmers and any delays in deliveries will inconvenience them a great deal," he added.
The MP who was recently elected the National Assembly Agriculture Committee chair also called for speedy processing of the farmers' payments.
"The last time we had a meeting with the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett, it was agreed that a farmer is paid within 24 hours of delivery, something that is yet to be followed," Tiren said.
This comes even as hundreds of lorries and tractors carrying maize are still lining up along the NCPB Eldoret silo road in hope that their produce will be received.
