The Kenya Prisons women’s volleyball team duo of Captain Mercy Moim and on-form Edith Wisa were voted the best attacker and blocker respectively at the African Nations Cup-cum- World Championship qualifiers end on Saturday night in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Moim emerged top scorer for the East Africans on many occasions in the event alongside Wisa, who was superb with her water-tight blocks and played in all the matches bagging many points in attacks.
Wisa’s exemplary performance emerged during their Pool ‘B’ tie against Senegal. She displayed character stopping red hot Fatou Diock as Senegal were leading 23-18, only for Kenya to turn things around to bag the set 28-26.
This is the second time Wisa is receiving the best blocker award. The former Lugulu Girls’ High school student bagged the award in the same category during the Africa Club Championship in Monastir, Tunisia early this year.
The two women,Wisa and Moim received the awards after the Kenyan side shockingly lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 29-27) during the final match against hosts Cameroon.
The duo were upbeat after they failed to defend their African title for a record 10th time and promised to do better in the World Championship in Japan next year. This was after finishing second with Cameroon in position one.
