Activists in Molo constituency have accused political leaders in the area of using public funds to advance their political ambitions.
According to Esther Thumbi, leaders in the area are using government bursaries to woo supporters.
“These leaders are now using the public funds set aside to help needy students achieve education. Why parade students when issuing cheques yet that is public money,” Thumbi said.
The activist hit out at leaders, whom she did not name, saying that many are running clandestine political activities using government money.
“When a leader behaves as if they are using their own money to give bursaries or construct roads, trying to woo supporters by making them think that it is a favour, who will check on them?”
Geoffrey Ndung’u Mburu said the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission should develop mechanism to check on this new development.
“Leaders are suing their offices to make political advances. That is illegal,” Mburu said.
He added: “The government should have a mechanism too, to check on this.”
