The veterans say that those agitating for a referendum should leave the government to fulfil its mandate. The women said they were angered by governors joining hands with the opposition to demand for an ‘unnecessary referendum’.

“Why are they disturbing the president and his government? We have said no to this referendum. We did not elect these governors to destroy our country with their everyday calls for referendum,” said 80-year-old Njeri Kahengeri.

Wanjiku Kihara, another of the veterans said they fought for Kenya for the benefit of all and it cannot be given away for any amount of money.

The women said they want to see their children live in Kenya peacefully, go to school and work anywhere.

“This country is for our children to enjoy the fruits of our armed struggle and what we missed. When we went to the forest, we were cheated that there would be land and freedom. We found out later that only death and poverty awaited us,” said Waruguru Gichuki, another veteran.

She added, “The politicians should know that we were naive then and not now.”
