Business came to a standstill in Molo town on Monday, after irate residents, traders and bodaboda operators demonstrated and barricaded Molo-Kibunja road.
The irate residents blocked the road with stones and lit tyres, as a sign of their anger over the poor state of the road.
Peter Gichomo, who closed his butchery after customers shunned the dusty 4 kilometer stretch, said a contractor who was on site 14 months ago did a shoddy job and left the site before laying tarmac.
He said residents living along the road, which also connects Molo and the busy Nakuru-Eldoret highway, have been complaining of chest, Lung and flu related complications after inhaling dust.
He added that it has been 10 years since the Government allocated money to construct the road, but nothing tangible has been seen 10 years down the line
“We squarely blame our MP for failing to lobby at the ministry of roads. We have held several consultative forums and what he has been promising us is mere public relation. We want to tell him that if this road will not be fixed we will start a process of collecting signatures to recall him,” said a former civic leader, Njenga Matendo.
He said the road is a thorn in the flesh to the residents, blaming previous contractors of abandoning the construction works.
He said the Molo-Kibunja road, which passes through a forest cover pose a serious security threat, adding that criminals were using the route and in several occasions they have successfully robbed travelers and goods on transit.
“We appeal to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene on this matter since we have been airing our grievances to our local leaders without success,” added Matendo.
