The government will establish a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Molo Sub County by September, KMTC Chairman Prof Philip Kaloki said.
The new college will be put up on a seven-acre piece of land next to Molo District Hospital. This will bring to two the number of KMTC colleges within Nakuru County.
Prof Kaloki gave the project a clean bill of health after inspecting available facilities at Molo District Hospital.
“In Molo we have a serene environment, modern facilities and adequate land on the periphery of the hospital,’’ Kaloki said.
“The institution will also offer training in community health and health management system among other courses. I will ensure that 30 per cent of the training vacancies are allocated to the local community,” he promised.
He said in partnership with area Member of Parliament Jacob Macharia and governor Kinuthia Mbugua, KMTC is committed to ensuring quick implementation of the training facility.
Prof Kaloki said the country requires more healthcare workers adding that those graduating every year were not enough to bridge the staffing gap especially in rural hospitals and dispensaries.
Molo MP Jacob Macharia said the project will improve the socio-economic status of Molo constituency, which has suffered the blunt of tribal clashes since the first multiparty elections of 1992.
“We have entered into partnership with the medical institution and laid up a progressive plan. The process is at an advanced stage to make sure Molo Constituency gets a campus that will serve residents from Molo, Rongai, Kuresoi North, Kuresoi south and Kipkelion east which neighbours our constituency,’’ he added.
Nakuru County Executive (CeC) for health Dr. Daniel Mungai Kabii said the county government is in full support of the college and will budget funds for its establishment in the coming financial year.
