A Nyamira Member of Parliament has accused Jubilee government for allegedly derailing construction of three major roads in the region, two years after President Uhuru Kenyatta gave residents an assurance.
President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered immediate construction of Chepilat-Chabera, Metamaywa-Kebirigo and Kemera-Amabuko roads during his maiden visit to the region in 2014, but the projects have since slowed down as 2017 approaches.
However, Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has accused the government of deliberately sabotaging construction of the roads because many of the county leaders are affiliated to the opposition Cord.
“I am disappointed with this government because it has shown why Kenya should vote it out. They have deliberately subjected our county to unwarranted discrimination simply because we are in opposition,” Momanyi said during a function at his Nyapara Ibere home on Saturday.
“The President had directed that the three roads are completed in time but what we are seeing is simply time wasting just to make opposition MPs look bad. Jubilee must understand that we are in a democratic country,” he added.
Momanyi said the poor status of the roads had led to high costs of production which has directly affected many tea farmers from the region.
“The effect of delayed construction of these roads is evident. Tea farmers are being overcharged transportation costs due to poor status of roads by factories. Time has come for Jubilee to develop the country without discriminating opposition strongholds,” he added.
Nyamira County government voted overwhelmingly for opposition Cord in 2013 polls that saw Raila Odinga garner over 70 per cent of votes and subsequent election of many Cord affiliated local leaders.
