Human Rights groups and politicians in Mombasa have postponed their planned protest against extrajudicial killing in the county.
The leaders were set to hold a demonstration on Friday, to protest against the killing of Tony Kenga, a 16-year-old boy who was allegedly shot dead by police officers.
The organizers, led by Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid, said the protests were rescheduled on the advice of police.
Mr Khalid said they had to postpone the demonstrations because of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s three-day tour of the county.
According to the Nation, police had cautioned the groups that they would not be accorded security as officers would be busy during the president’s visit.
“The organisers of the demo are consulting with other organisers to set another date for the protest. The police are not against the protests,” he said.
The human rights groups and politicians had announced on Tuesday that they would hold peaceful demonstrations to protest against the killing of Tony Kenga, among others.
Haki Africa, a Mombasa-based civil society group, had teamed up with families of those felled by police in unclear circumstances, to institute public interest litigation in a bid to get justice for victims of alleged extrajudicial killing.
