Leaders in Mombasa County have continued condemning the destruction of the famous crocodile sculpture erected outside Mamba Village.
Sheikh Abdurahim Bakathir said the sculpture should have been relocated elsewhere as many tourists liked it.
Speaking to journalists in Mombasa on Tuesday, Sheikh Bakathir said the destruction of the statue will deny the county and the national government revenue as the sculpture was a big tourist attraction.
The eight-metre long crocodile sculpture is said to have been designed and built by an Israeli architect 41 years ago.
The sculpture at the entrance of Mamba Village in Nyali was brought down by the county government last week in order to pave way for road expansion in the county.
“Last Tuesday was a sad day for the people of Mombasa. The county government destroyed the sculpture which has been a tourist attraction as it welcomes visitors to the famous Mamba village,” said Mr Bakathir who is a historian.
Sheikh Bakathir said they were not against road expansion in the area but they were shocked by the destruction of the iconic statue.
