Barely a day after the Mombasa County Executive Member in charge of Environment Doctor Godffrey Nyongesa unveiled plans to manage solid waste, county officials have swing into action in inspecting drainage systems in the county.

His counterpart from the Devolution, Public service and Administration Seth Odongo on Thursday launched plans to inspect the county drainage systems in a bid to kill all mosquito breeding areas within the county.

The breeding sites together with unlicensed dumping sites have been mentioned as some of the major cause of Chikungunya disease outbreak in Mombasa.

The county said that it will only leave Mwakirunge in Kisauni, Kibarani in Changamwe and Shonda area in Likoni dump sites, though Doctor Nyongesa revealed that the county was in plans to shut down Kibarani dumping site.

On Thursday several people dumping in the banned areas within Kisauni, Bombolulu and the Mombasa Island were arrested and taken to the county court.

According to Nyongesa, the county will no longer tolerate such reckless dumping of garbage in undesignated places and said that after the seven day ultimatum, the county officials will move in all residential areas to ensure that house owners install dust bins right outside their homes.

Nyongesa said that locals should adhere to the county environmental rules so that the county remain clean at all times, warning that anyone found dumping solid waste in undesignated area will be dealt with according to the law.

“We should all work towards a clean environment so for those who will ignore the calls will be arrested and charged,” he said.

Doctor Nyongesa said that a fine of up to 100 thousand shillings will be imposed to anyone who will dump in public places.

Meanwhile the county is planning to remove all garbage truck located in various strategic points within the county.
