The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and the county government of Mombasa have partnered to rehabilitate Mombasa's historical sites as the devolved unit seeks to boost tourism in the Coastal town.
Mombasa Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi on Tuesday said the county hugely relies on tourism for its growth, adding that more efforts will be channeled towards supporting the sector.
Kingi spoke after the county's Department of Youth, Sports, Gender and Culture under Chief Executive Committee member Munywoki Kyalo signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday with NMK.
The MoU will provide a framework for partnership between the NMK and the county in rehabilitating heritage centers and monuments.
NMK Director General Dr Mzalendo Kibunja assured the county officials of the commitment by the NMK in uplifting the faces of historical sites that have for many years preserved the rich heritage of the Coastal people.
Kingi reiterated the commitment by Governor Hassan Joho to the MoU which will keep the county at par with emerging trends in tourism that has seen more income from historical sites and monuments world over.
"We encourage our citizens to also join us in these efforts by selfishly guarding our environment and ensuring high standards of cleanliness around these sites," Kingi said.
Kibunja on his part said: "The restoration and face lifting of these sites and monuments shall go along way in marketing the county as a top tourist destination and in turn generate more revenue for the tourism sector."
