[Photo|William Kingi]Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Ahrub Khatri accompanied Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi to a workshop on cooperation between Mombasa county and Vasternorrland county, Sweden in building capacity to address literacy challenges and enhancing democratic engagements between the two counties. Kingi said one of the challenges facing Kenya as a country and particularly in the coastal counties is poor outcomes in education. "Our schools churn out pupils with low literacy and numeracy skills. It is possible the methods used to impart these skills have not been appropriate for our children hence the need to benchmark for best practises," he said on Wednesday. As a government, he said they welcome such innovations that seek to use sport and the out-of-class experience to develop literacy skills."This will also have the added advantage of helping children to refocus on learning even outside school.""By making the playground an extension of the classroom through ingenuity, we also make the learning experience enjoyable."Kingi cited the traditional African teaching methods which use oral traditions through play and dance, saying the methods have the effect of carrying forward thought and belief through generations even though much of the folklore is unwritten. The deputy governor affirmed that he Department of Education was willing to avail staff and resources to make sure the programme succeeds with the hope that it will also provide a platform for cultural exchanges and sharing of experiences to enrich both the teachers and learners.
