Mombasa County will now have a new police commander following a mini-reshuffle in the Police Service.

According to The Star, Patterson Maelo, who is said to have retired, has been replaced by Johnstone Ipara, as Kenyans prepare to hold fresh presidential elections on October 26.

Kisumu County Police Commander Titus Yoma has also been transferred following the changes.

Yoma is expected to take the position of Garissa regional police commander after the Thursday reshuffle.

The new Kisumu police boss will be John Kamau.

Kilifi commander Wachira Mathenge has been replaced by Ben Kogo of Marsabit.

The changes in the Police Service come a few days after NASA’s anti-IEBC protests turned violent in different parts of the country including Kisumu.

At least four people were reported dead and several others injured following the protests in Kisumu.

NASA leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday announced major countrywide anti-IEBC demonstrations on October 26 - the date of repeat polls.

The opposition wants Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Ezra Chiloba and other officials accused of bungling the August 8 presidential election resign ahead of the rerun.
