The Mombasa gubernatorial race has taken new shape following the selection of Hassan Mwamtoa as Nyali MP Hezron Awiti's running mate in the August polls.
Mwamtoa was selected by the Mijikenda elders who form the majority of the voting population in Mombasa after a seven-month long vetting exercise that saw several other applicants rejected.According to sources privy to the Awiti-Mwamtoa camp, the two are expected to share positions equally should they manage to elbow the incumbent, Governor Hassan Joho out of power.Mwamtoa who was unveiled during an event in Likoni on Saturday outlined the various developmental issues that they will solve should they win the August poll. The unveiling of Mwamtoa to be Awiti's running mate brings the number of Mombasa governor hopefuls who have already settled on their deputies to two. Earlier, Deputy President William Ruto brokered a deal in the Jubilee Party camp that will see former Kisauni MP Anania Mwaboza deputise businessman Suleiman Shahbal in the race to unseat ODM's Joho. This comes after Awiti recently ditched Wiper for Vibrant Democratic Party.
