Leaders in the Coastal County of Mombasa have condemned the destruction of one of the region’s iconic landmark.
The eight-metre long crocodile statue which was located at the entrance of Mamba Village in Mombasa, is said to have been erected by an Israeli architect at least 41 years ago.
The decision to destroy the statue to pave way for road construction was condemned by Mombasa leaders who said that better alternatives should have been sort.
Nyali MP Hezron Awiti faulted the county government as well as the contractor for the destruction of the iconic statue.
“The sculpture was brought down to pave way for road expansion. I am not opposed to the project but they should have given us notice to remove it properly,” he said.
Mombasa county executive for transport and infrastructure Tawfiq Balala expressed similar sentiments saying that he was not opposed to the road construction project, adding that better options other than the one they took were available .
The leaders pledged to liaise with the Mamba Village in efforts to re erect the statue, with Awiti pledging to donate 500,000 shillings to facilitate the reconstruction.
