The County government of Mombasa has officially activated the Disaster Management Committee to carry out an operation to mitigate the effects of the anticipated heavy rains.

The committee, comprising of officers from various departments and the Sub-county Administration, has already set up rescue teams and Disaster Management Centres in various sub-counties with special attention to areas prone to flooding.

Lands CeC Edward Nyale was present as the team was being unveiled on Monday.

A statement from the Sub County Administration said the operation includes the National government and the private sector such the Kenya Red Cross, as the County government of Mombasa looks forward to ensuring normalcy in flood hotspots, smooth drainage of water and curb waterborne diseases. 

Members of the public have since been urged to take precautionary measures and cooperate fully with the authorities in the operation to ensure safety for all residents and property in Mombasa County.

In the neighbouring Kilifi County, floods have wrecked havoc, displacing hundreds of people.
