There are plans to turn the Mombasa-Nairobi road into a six-lane road to ease the congestion normally witness due to huge numbers of trailers on the road.

Transport committees' meeting with Treasury is scheduled today Tuesday to discuss the project's financing options.

The six-lane road will run parallel to the existing one and will be 473 kilometers long. 

The lane will have 48 kilometers of interchanges, 189 kilometers of local roads, 76 overpasses, 21 underpasses and 189 culverts.

A meeting to discuss the options for financing the project is to take place today Tuesday.

The National Assembly's Transport committee will be meeting with the Treasury, Transport ministry and roads agency officials basically to discuss the financing options.The new modern highway to be undertaken by the  American construction company, Bechtel, will cost the government ksh300 billion.

The committee decided to meet following reports that the US firm wants Kenya To finance the highway with a loan from a United States bank and another institution in the United Kingdom

Ahead of the scheduled meeting, the director of the public-private-partnerships Unit at the Treasury, Mr. Stanley Kamau said all the financing options were already on the table awaiting decision making.

"You have to look at the best action in terms of pricing, timeliness and everything else, and that is what is on the table for discussion, so I wouldn't say that a decision has been made. Those decisions are being considered," said Mr. Kamau.
