Mombasa nurses have threatened to down their tools from Christmas over unpaid salaries. The nurses have lamented that they are yet to be paid their five-months salaries despite resuming work after the 154-day national strike.Speaking on Tuesday, the Kenya National Union of Nurses Mombasa branch secretary general Peter Maroko asked the county government to ensure that they are paid their dues before Christmas. He also said that they are no longer ready to listen to empty promises."We cannot buy stories anymore. We shall proceed and go for a work boycott," said Maroko, as quoted by The Star. The nurses also claimed that some of their colleagues have received their salaries, adding that they will look for alternative ways to earn an income if their plight is not addressed. They also said patients will be compelled to seek treatment elsewhere if the issue is not resolved in time."If there are no salaries there are not going to be nursing services, therefore, they should prepare to take their patients to other facilities where they will get the services,” he added. The group also complained that they have been blocked from taking leave on grounds that they were on strike for several months. The Mombasa County government under the leadership of Governor Hassan Joho had not responded to the strike notice at the time of reporting. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
