The port users have decried increasing traffic in and out of the port, adding that the expansion of roads will help hasten movement of cargo and reduce the huge cost of shipping.

According to Media Max, Car Importers Association of Kenya (CIAK) chairman Peter Otieno said the two lane highway linking Mombasa and Nairobi is to blame for frequent traffic snarl-up caused by cargo trucks particularly at Mariakani and Mlolongo weigh bridges.

Otieno attributed increased traffic jams to lack of adequate infrastructure outside the port, which consequently lead to an increase in the cost of shipping.

He hailed the ongoing expansion, saying it will ease the cost of doing business, but pressured the government to speed up the construction works.

This comes a month after Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said that the government will be partnering with the private sector to build a six-lane highway from Mombasa to Nairobi.

The CS also stressed the importance of the ongoing construction of the Standard Gauge Railway in easing traffic flow between Nairobi and Mombasa.
