Mombasa County is among devolved units where residents over-consume alcohol, a lobby group has revealed.
Free Coast Of Drugs, a Coast based Non Governmental Organisation on Wednesday said the county led by Governor Hassan Joho ranks second in alcohol abuse in the region with Kilifi taking first position.
The lobby group's coordinator, Albert Mwandawiro said there is need for all stakeholders including the national and county governments in the region to intervene and reduce alcohol consumption and drug abuse before the situation spirals out of control.
"Presently Kilifi is in the lead and Mombasa comes second with Tana River standing at third position. This is worrying. Alcohol is not good, it should be consumed in moderation," Mwandawiro said.
Coast region is among zones in Kenya heavily affected by the alcohol and drugs abuse problem.
Governor Hassan Joho during his inaugural speech after being sworn in for a second term said alcoholism and abuse of drugs was among his key priorities as he embarks serving his second term.
At the last days of his first term in office he launched a drugs rehabilitation centre in Mombasa town which he said would help reform residents heavily affected by effects of drugs abuse.
