Photo: Hassan Joho/ facebook.comMombasa Governor Hassan Joho has said his government needs at least Sh2 billion in a bid to clear the heaps of garbage in various parts of the county. Speaking at Sarova Whitesands Mombasa on Wednesday during a meeting with business partners, Joho said that the Sh600 million his government has been collecting annually is not enough to keep the county clean.“The county normally collects Sh600 million which is truly not sufficient to conduct a thorough cleaning drive in this city,” said Joho, as quoted by Baraka FM. Joho also said that residents are not charged for the collection and management of garbage.“Not a single person is charged by the county government for waste collection and management,” he said.According to the county boss, the amount collected by his government is inadequate to cater for all the bills including medical care, electricity, cleaning among others.“The amount that the county collects annually cannot pay our traffic officers, conduct a thorough cleaning drive or pay electricity bills and neither can it offer international standard medical care,” said Joho. The governor, however, said that he has done all his best to ensure that garbage is collected and managed properly. He pointed out that the county government has set up special business stalls at a cheaper cost to save on the money collected from tax payers. “We have as a county made efforts to bring sanity in our prime city by building special business stalls at an affordable rate,” said Joho. This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta asked Joho to account for the billions his government has been receiving from the national government.
