[Photo/Nation newspaper]Mombasa County Commissioner (CC) Evans Achoki has said that security has been beefed up in the coastal city ahead of the Christmas-New Year holidays.Achoki has assured residents of the coastal county and the visitors of enhanced security ahead of the festivities.‘We have taken steps to heighten security across the coastal city and there are visible police deployments at all public places’ he said.He said that uniformed and plain-clothed police officers have been deployed around beach hotels, shopping malls and places of worship where huge gatherings of people are expected. The county chief said places of worship, hotels, and other vital government installations will remain under tight security surveillance during the festive season.''We want people to remain vigilant at all times as crowds are expected to increase as Christmas Day and New Year celebrations approaches,’' he said.He added that police has put in place a robust and elaborate security arrangement and crime prevention strategies to ensure incident-free Christmas celebrations. He was addressing Wananchi at the Tononoka sports grounds to mark 54 years since Kenya’s independence from the British on December 12, 1963.The administrator said the security agencies have taken precautionary measures to secure residents and holidaymakers and hoped that Christmas and New Year holidays will be celebrated without any problem.Former Minister Suleiman Shakombo and former Changamwe MP Ramadhan Kajembe have called on the coastal residents to reject leaders who are pushing for the secession of the coast region. The two said calls for coast region to secede from the rest of Kenya are spearheaded by politicians seeking relevance in the ‘2022 national politics’.Shakambo said devolution offers a real opportunity for Kenyans to participate in nation building and wondered why anyone would be talking about secession when we should all be strengthening the devolved system of governance.Mombasa Council of Elders chairman Mohamed Jahazi have echoed the same sentiments and urged the political leadership in Mombasa and the larger coast region to work with the government of the day to achieve a prosperous and stable Kenya.
