Most of the residents turned up at the last minute at various registration centres in a bid to take part in the mass exercise before it closes.

Mr Rashid Abdalla, a businessman, said he took some time off so that he doesn’t miss the deadline for registration.

“Kenyans are known for waiting for the last minute. I’ve been busy with work and since today is the last day, I must ensure that I am registered so as to make a difference during the elections,” he said.

He added, “Every Kenyan should take the initiative and register so that they can take part in molding the future of the country.”

One of the clerks at the IEBC centres who spoke on condition of anonymity said there had been a steady rise of voter registration ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

“Since Monday, the numbers of those coming to register have increased. People are coming in large numbers and we are prepared to register all of them,” said the clerk.

IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan has ruled out an extension of the voter registration exercise once the deadline expires.
