Residents of Mombasa County have praised the government for initiating projects that have turned around lives of the coastal people.
During his tour of the Coast last week, President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the Buxton Footbridge, Bamburi Storm Water Drainage and Ziwa la Ng’ombe Informal Settlement Improvement Programme.
Led by the chairman of Ziwa la Ng’ombe Settlement Executive Committee Swalleh Abdalla, the residents acknowledged the positive impact the projects have had in their lives.
Swalleh said the area posted improved results in national exams, since children from poor families are now able to do their homework using high mast street lighting.
He said since roads and drainage were improved, the value of their land had gone up from an average of Sh200,000 per plot to over Sh2 million.
“Our lives have totally changed, since we now have better access roads which have also improved our security,” said Swalleh as quoted by mygov.go.ke.
He noted that children and expectant mothers were now closer to health services, following the construction of a health centre in the area.
The Buxton Footbridge and Bamburi Storm Water Drainage were implemented by the Directorate of Urban and Metropolitan Development while Ziwa la Ng’ombe Improvement Programme was implemented by the Kenya Slums Improvement Programme (KISIP).
They are all anchored in the State Department for Housing and Urban Development.
Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Aidah Munano who accompanied the President during the tour said projects carried out by the State Department had spurred tangible development, besides having direct impact on the lives of ordinary Kenyans.
