The government has unveiled its plans to launch a subsidised cooking gas project in Mombasa.The project, which has been dubbed Mwananchi Gas Project, is expected to be rolled out in the county in January 2018.Under the project, residents will receive complete 6kg cylinders, with a burner and grill.Susan Kusu, a supervisor at National Oil station in Mombasa said the gas cylinder brand, which has been named “Gas Yetu”, will be sold at a discounted price of Sh2,000, as opposed to the current market price of Sh4,000. Kusu said the cooking gas cylinders are available in Nairobi, but will be distributed in Mombasa starting January.“We still do not have them here in Mombasa but they are available in Nairobi. However, we expect to begin distribution starting next year January,” said Kusu, as quoted by Baraka FM.She urged residents in the county to exercise patience before the distribution of the cylinders commences. The national government has set aside Sh2.2 billion to be used to purchase 720,000 cooking gas cylinders and refill plant machinery.The project is expected to improve the livelihoods of low-income earners.
