A section of Mombasa residents has welcomed the national government’s move to ban shisha sale and smoking across the nation. According to the residents, the government deserves credit for making such a decision following concerns from different groups.

A number of residents who spoke to eDaily, said that the decision is well-thought about and timely. The residents in the area asked the government to take the task of implementing the ban seriously.

“I welcome the government’s move to ban the sale and use of shisha in Kenya. The move will help reduce the number of health issues arising from the smoking of shisha. We’ve seen shisha users developing cancer and several other illnesses. In short, the move is highly-welcomed,” said one of the residents, who sought anonymity.

In a legal notice issued on December 27, Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Cleopa Mailu said that is illegal to sell or smoke Shisha in the country.

Individuals who will not adhere to the ban risk a fine not exceeding Ksh50, 000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or to both.

The move has, however, not augured well with a section of businessmen who were selling Shisha. The businessmen had faulted the government for taking an abrupt decision without consulting them over the same.
