Police in Mombasa will this week conduct a crackdown on shops selling maize flour at prices other than the Sh90 per 2kg packet that the government has set.
There has been an acute shortage of the Sh90-per-2kg packet government subsidized maize flour in Mombasa.
County commissioner Evans Achoki said some retailers are hording the maize flour provided by the government creating the shortage.
He alleged a plot by some of the rogue retailers to sell the government-subsidized maize at exorbitant prices.
"We are going to ensure that the government directive is enforced," county commissioner Evans Achoki said on Wednesday.
He spoke after a meeting with millers in Mombasa over the shortage of maize flour in shops.
Achoki said retailers selling the precious commodity at more than Sh90 are illegally doing it.
“We will find these people, arrest them and charge them in court. Unga must be sold at Sh90,” Achoki said.
