Youths in Nakuru county have protested the misuse of county funds in a recent retreat believed to have cost the county Sh25 million.
The youth argued that this was wastage of resources.
“We are calling upon the EACC to investigate the county especially in regards to the misuse of the funds. Recently we lost Sh15 million to the Nakuru Youth Week and now we have lost Sh25 million in a retreat that was unnecessary,” said Peter Mwangi, a resident.
Joseph Mureithi said that the county was grappling with serious health-related cases but continued wasting resources which could be spent on addressing such cases.
“We have increased cases of cholera outbreak in the county. They should prioritise issues affecting them before first going for the retreat,” said Martin Mwaura, another youth.
They were speaking to the press in Nakurusaying this was the second recess the county was undertaking this year.
“Recently, they went to Crayfish for a weekend and it cost the county Sh5 million. This is absurd wastage as many people are still languishing in poverty,” said James Kimani.
They are now threatening to go to court over the misuse of funds.
“Why should we suffer from lack of basic necessities such as water and poor electricity supply while they comfortably waste our taxes?” posed Irene Muthoni.
