A school in Likoni, Mombasa County has accused Kenya Navy of land grabbing. According to Daily Nation, parents, teachers and some students of Mweza Primary and Secondary schools camped at the institution on Wednesday in a bid to stop plans by the soldiers to fence the land.

The parents arrived at the school, which is located near the Kenya Navy’s Mtongwe Base residential houses, and started filling trenches that had been dug for the construction of the wall. The wall will affect part of the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) Center, three classrooms, playground, and toilets.

Monica Mumbo, the school’s head, said that the Kenya Navy had hired local residents to assist in the construction of the wall, adding that the move has not augured well with the parents.

“The local contractors have been here since Monday digging the trenches to put the wall. When the parents heard of the move they mobilised themselves and assembled here so that we can stop this construction,” Mumbo said, as quoted by the local daily

Mumbo also claimed that eight soldiers were camping at the place, but they left when they realized pictures were being taken.

She also said that the school, which has more than 600 students, has raised the issue with the county government but not much has been done.

On his part, Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki said that the construction has been halted until further notice.
