Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has said the county will not hold demonstrations against the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), citing a show of respect to the Holy month of Ramadhan.
Joho who is also the ODM deputy party leader, said their supporters in Mombasa will not participate in the country-wide demonstrations organised by the Cord Coalition, because most of them will be fasting.
Speaking on Saturday at Kisauni Baptist primary school, Joho said the coalition will continue with their weekly demonstrations until IEBC commissioners vacate office, a move he said will ensure free and fair elections.
“Most of our supporters in Mombasa are fasting hence we will not participate in the demos in respect to the Holy month of Ramadhan. We will resume the protests once we're done fasting,” he said.
Cord leaders have announced they will resume its weekly anti-IEBC protests on Monday.
The coalition has written to police notifying them of their intention to resume the protests.
This comes after the Jubilee coalition welcomed Cord’s proposal to nominate seven members from each side to discuss the way forward on the IEBC matter.
Cord has also threatened to hold the demonstrations on Monday and Thursday.
