Mwakirunge dump site in Mombasa County has been ear marked for relocation.
This comes after reports indicated that the dump site was interfering with air traffic due to its proximity to the Moi International Airport.
According to Stephen Wambua, the Environmental Director in Mombasa County, the relocation exercise will commence immediately contrary to an earlier statement that had said the area is suitable and appropriate for a dump site.
“The relocation is as a result of concerns raised by the Kenya Aviation Authority that the dumping area is within a thirteen-kilometer flight path reserved for the airport,” said Wambua.
However, Wambua assured the public that the county administration is sourcing for an alternative site.
“In the mean time, we urge residents to use the other dump sites within their reach, as the county has a total of 63 garbage collection sites,” said Wambua.
Wambua further noted that the county is working with voluntary organisations to ensure that the garbage situation does not get out of hand.
