Lari MP Joseph Mburu has said that most of the money disbursed to Kiambu County has been put into wrong use.
At the same time, he has told off governors asking for a referendum saying they should first account for the money they have been given.
Mburu says that the 190 billion shillings allocated to the counties in the last financial year, most of it was used in foreign travels by MCAs and governors and buying fuel guzzlers among other non-essential expenditure.
“Here in Kiambu, the county government has spent more than Sh7 billion on foreign travels, another six billion on vehicles. Now where do you leave money for development? To make the matter worse the governor is still asking for more,” Mburu said.
The legislator adds that many governors, when seeking the posts had thought that they will not be held accountable and that is why there are finding it hard when accountability questions are raised.
The legislator spoke after Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a called for the investigation of both Governor William Kabogo and the county finance CeC Mary Nguli.
Ng’ang’a’s sentiments came a week after the Kiambu County assembly voted to oust Nguli for misappropriation of funds. She urged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate both the minister and her boss adding that they should also be taken to court if they are found guilty of misappropriating public funds.
Speaking while addressing the public in Githurai, the MP said there is no way a minister can misuse public funds without the governor’s knowledge. She accused them of collaborating to steal from the people of Kiambu County.
