Governance analyst David Osiany has disagreed with the assertion that a slash of the salary of Mps will lead to the saving of good amounts of public money in the country.

According to Osiany, the ongoing debate on the salary of Mps is misplaced as the main focus should be shifted to corruption in the country. In doing so, Osiany believes that the country will be able to save up to at least kshs 600 billion as compared to kshs 8 billion from Mps salary.

"I think the country is overdramatizing issues. As much as we want the salary of Mps to be slashed, the main focus should be on corruption. This is because a slash of the salary will only get us Sh8b as compared to  Sh600b from stopping corruption," said Osiany.

The analyst further criticized the call stating that long term serving Mps should earn more than the newcomers.

He believes the newly drafted pay by Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) should apply to all legislators and not the newcomers alone. This he believes will avoid a rift between the Mps.

"It is wrong for newcomers to be subjected to a less pay compared to those who have been serving for much longer period. All Mps are equal and should thus accept or deny the new pay cut suggestion from SRC. If done otherwise then there will be a rift among the legislators," added Osiany.

Osiany made the remarks on Thursday during an on Citizen Extra show on Citizen TV where he further demystified a notion that all leaders in the country are motivated by money.
