Outspoken Nyamira Senator Mong’are Okong’o has yet again accused the county assembly of ‘absconding’ its constitutional mandate by allegedly ‘dining’ with the county executive.
His remarks come after revelations by the Auditor General that S60 million meant for executive spending and another Sh59 million for County Assembly in financial year 2014/15 could not be accounted for.
In his Facebook post, the Ford Kenya Senator accused MCAs of deviating from their oversight roles and insisted that they were protecting impunity by executive with a promise of rewards.
“The MCAs are busy absconding their constitutional mandate and have reverted to dining with the executive. None of them is serious because we are getting corruption related scandals every time from Nyamira,” he said.
“These people have failed of county badly and perhaps that is why we are struggling to leave a mark in the first years of devolved governance. I am busy fighting for more resources to counties and they are busy protecting impunity by tolerating corruption,” he added.
He challenged the MCAs to implement a Public Accounts Committee report that was tabled in the assembly and subsequently voted out by majority of members.
“It’s not all of them who are not serious. The PAC committee of our assembly did a good report that recommended prosecutions but it was defeated because the executive interfered the process by compromising a number of them. This assembly has failed us,” he said.
Efforts to reach Majority leader Laban Masira and his Minority counterpart Jason Mogusu were futile since they are said to be away for budget making process in Kisumu.
