The company said in a statement that the monkey fell on one of the transformers at the Gitaru Power Station thus tripping it.

KenGen said this caused other machines at the power station to trip.

It said there was a loss of more that 180MW from the plant, which triggered a national power blackout.

“At 1129 hours this morning, a monkey climbed on the roof of Gitaru Power Station and dropped onto a transformer tripping it. This caused other machines at the power station to trip…resulting in a loss of more than 180MW from this plant which triggered a national blackout,” said the power generator.

“The system has since been restored and all our power generating units are operating normally.”

Gitaru power station is the biggest in terms of installed capacity and can serve a fifth of the country's capacity from its 225 MW peak power generation.
