In an effort to alleviate the falling academic standards of education in Kiambu County, there is need for more day secondary schools in the region.
Kiambu County Director of Education, Boniface Gitau told journalists on Wednesday in his office that there was need for the leaders in the area to strategise and put up more day secondary schools since many local parents could not afford to pay the high fees charged in boarding schools.
He said more than 1000 children who sat for KCPE examinations could not get admission in the few public secondary schools.
The director observed that education was a prerequisite for development, and that there was need for the political leadership to co-operate with the people and enhance the construction of day schools, as they were affordable.
He expressed fear that due to lack of adequate day schools in the area, there was danger of young people being lured into child labour in public service vehicles to eke a living.
Gitau however, hailed Senior Chief Koinange administration for allowing 2 classes that were not being fully used to be converted into a day secondary school.
He said that the mixed class was started last January, and within the first week, one hundred students, who he said might not have had an opportunity to proceed for secondary education, had enrolled.
Ndumberi high school, which also started recently, has students up to form three. The school, which has two streams, has absorbed primary school leavers who were not admitted to public secondary schools.
