Police in Nyandarua County has recovered over 5,000 bags and put in custody three suspects found in possession of contraband sugar.

The County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich stated that the three are prominent businessmen in Ol-Kalou and are in connection with the sale of the product.

“Further investigations are underway to verify if the sugar is poisonous and if it was shipped into the country illegally,” he said on Tuesday. 

A multi-agency team comprising of security and Public Health officers, officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) are in Nyandarua overseeing an ongoing crackdown. 

Several supermarkets and wholesale outlets in Nyahururu and Ol-Kalou town were raided by the team in the process to recover the contraband goods. There is yet another group which is at the Engineer Trading Center in Kinangop where a similar commodity is said to be hidden in some go-downs. 

The County Commissioner was accompanied by Central Regional Police commander Felix Munyambu and Regional CID boss Danson Ndiru.
