Discrimination against Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD) is still high in Nakuru despite the existence of laws protecting disabled persons, Nakuru nominated MCA Emma Mbugua has complained.
The MCA observes that disabled persons are being discriminated upon in many ways even when it comes to public office appointments.
Mbugua alleged that some disabled persons in Nakuru have been neglected.
“Despite the laws we have in place which are meant to protect us, we are still being looked down upon,” she said.
She noted that out of depression many disabled persons contemplate committing suicide to put to an end the ridicule they get.
Mbugua called on the national and county governments to put in place more policies that will protect and empower disabled persons.
She further asked the Nakuru government to include disabled persons in development projects stating that it is the only way they will be empowered.
On the same note, the MCA challenged disabled persons to vie for leadership positions in the government and private sector.
She said that through leadership positions disabled persons will be able to voice their grievances.
