Former Kisumu Mayor Sam Okello has said the ongoing voter registration exercise has revealed how there is a low uptake of Identity Cards in the region.
Okello said the long queues being witnessed at chiefs offices and Huduma Centres shows that people in the region do not have the crucial document.
Okello who is vying for the Kisumu Central MP seat, however, said people should not be discouraged adding that they should continue applying for the document.
“Let nobody feel that he or she is old and cannot line up to get an ID. It is for their benefit not only for elections but other useful ventures,” he said.
He said, as politicians, they have been making visits to every registration centre but have been shocked by the number of adults who do not have IDs.
Okello said the quest for Cord leader Raila Odinga for State House will only succeed if the locals rally behind him through getting IDs and registering as voters.
Speaking in Kisumu on Thursday, Okello urged chiefs in the region to help those without IDs.
He said those who can volunteer too should come out in these remaining five days and mobilise people to register as voters.
“It is an appeal am sending to our administrators, please help our people to get IDs,” he said.
