Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has downplayed Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s withdrawal from the October 26 fresh election.

According to Kiraitu, the polls will proceed as planned.

The governor said it was up to IEBC to conduct the exercise as stipulated in the Constitution.

Saying, Raila’s name will still be on then ballot, Kiraitu said the Opposition chief has no powers to postpone the poll or have his name removed from the ballot. He also faulted the anti-IEBC street protests organised by Nasa, terming them “uncalled for and unnecessary tactics meant to attract attention.”

“Kenya is governed by the rule of law which the IEBC must follow to the letter,” he said. The governor spoke at county headquarters yesterday.

Meru Senator Mithika Linturi and Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi echoed Kiraitu’s sentiments, and advised Kenyans to shun unnecessary demos meant to pursue “selfish interests.”
