The debate about possibility of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i deputising William Ruto in 2022 has continued to dominate Gusii politics.
Over the weekend, Borabu MP Ben Momanyi ignited the debate when he said the community should consider backing Matiang'i due to its increasing numbers in terms of voter registration.
"Our number is now big and it is important to go for something big. I am convinced that Matiang'i is fit to take over as deputy president," he said.
Multiple sources indicate that plans are in place for leaders from both Kisii and Nyamira Counties to form a single political party, to increase their bargaining power.
At an interview in Minto FM, North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko, said the community is targeting for the deputy president post, adding that Matiang'i was the top option.
"We have numbers and it is time we make use of it. We shall back one of us, probably Matiang'i for the post in 2022," he said.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Jimmy Angwenyi who said: "We have Matiang'i as our senior most leader and whatever the direction we shall take, he must move with us."
Currently, Matiang'i is the senior most leader holding a political office besides Chief Justice David Maraga, whose position is constitutional.
