Amani National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Godfrey Osotsi has joined the list of leaders in support of the ongoing constitutional amendment debate.
In an interview on Radio Maisha on Wednesday, the ANC nominated Member of Parliament faulted the current leadership system calling for a referendum to correct the same.
He stressed on the need for a shift from the current presidential system to a parliamentary one, noting that it has crippled parliamentarians' oversight responsibilities thus slowing down development.
''There is an urgent need for the country to revert back to the initial parliamentary system because the current system has made it hard for lawmakers to conduct their oversight roles,'' said Osostsi.
''We need to have Cabinet Secretaries (CS) sitting in parliament since as things stand now we have to summon them whenever the need arises, making it a long and slow process, with others defying our summons sending their juniors further making our job hard,'' added the opposition lawmaker.
The referendum debate follows the recent peace pact between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga where they agreed to unite in pursuit of national unity.
The push is, however, facing opposition from a section of Jubilee government-allied leaders led by Deputy President William Ruto who have termed it as a scheme to benefit individual politicians.
