Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery says security agents are working round the clock to restore order in Mandera following the killing of 12 people on Tuesday by suspected Al Shabaab militia.
The CS said they are collaborating with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to set up a border command unit to counter the entrance of Al shabaab into Kenya.
Nkaissery further said that the establishment of units along the Kenya Somalia border will boost security in the country.
“Our people are working on it to ensure that the perpetrators of that despicable act are brought to book. As I said, we are working around the clock not only in Mandera, but across the country to ensure that our citizens are safeguarded,” he said via capital news.
Speaking in Kwale County, Nkaissery indicated that more police officers have been deployed to hunt down those behind Tuesday’s attack.
He commended the police for quick response and explained that the incident occurred at Bishaare Hotel in Mandera town where the militants are said to have attacked the lodging’s occupants using IED’s and grenades.
Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe reiterated that additional military personnel will specifically be diployed along the Mandera-Lamu border to deal with Al shabaab attacks.
Mwathethe said the newly proposed border command unit will play a major role in securing the porous Kenya-Somalia border.
