With the all-important exercise, observers from all over the world as well as international journalists are in the country, with all eager to report on events during and after the polls.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has so far recorded over 5,000 observers and revealed on Thursday that it was in the process of accrediting many more.

With only four days to the elections, the commission has further accredited more than 560 journalists, and was working round the clock to give the nod to thousands of applicants.

The number is a significant increase from the 1,834 observers that were present during the last General Election.

The foreigners include international journalists covering the elections for major global news networks, as well as politicians and electoral experts who have specialised in election monitoring through international observer missions.

Speaking to the Daily Nation on Thursday, IEBC spokesman Mr Andrew Limo said the number is set to rise before the country goes to the polls.

“We are overwhelmed by late requests, so the numbers could go higher,” Mr Limo said.
