Hundreds of people have run away from insecurity stricken Mt Elgon sub-county in Bungoma County over fear of night attacks.
Those who fled the area and are camped in Cheptain town claim they found leaflets at their doorsteps on Thursday morning warning them of dire consequences should they fail to leave the area. One of the residents who fled the area and talked to a reporter from Qwetu Radio claimed those targeted are people who do not come from the native Sabaot community which is the dominant community in the sub-county.The Sabaot form part of the larger Kalenjin community that predominantly inhabits the Rift Valley region. There have been violent clashes in Mt Elgon for the last close to two months as unknown people have been raiding individual homesteads killing people.Deputy President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i recently visited the volatile area and promised peace will be restored in the area."We will not sit and watch as innocent civilians are killed, women raped and livestock shot dead. Security personnel will be justified to use force to apprehend criminals," Ruto said when he visited the area on Sunday. "These criminals are not outsiders but they live among you," he added, as quoted by Daily Nation.Over 10 people have so far been killed in the area.
