Mombasa governor Hassan Joho has attracted unflattering publicity over uncollected garbage in the county.
The flamboyant governor, in a county assembly address. said that garbage collection will be a top priority of his administration.
Joho pledged to implement an integrated solid management blueprint to clear the garbage that has been polluting the air.
Concerns have been expressed that if the problem is not addressed swiftly, there will be an outbreak of diseases.
Joho's administration has pinned the blame on the national government's delay in disbursing funds.
County secretary Francis Thoya, however, said that the county government of Mombasa was doing everything possible to clear the garbage.
''We have to admit that there is a lot of garbage. But we have undertaken measures to address the issue.'' Thoya told the media.
The problem of garbage has been a huge one many framing it as a public health crisis that needs to be looked into promptly.
In a campaign in a market in Nyali, President Uhuru lashed out at the Joho administration, accusing it of abdication of duty for allowing garbage to pile.
He told the traders in the market not to pay a penny to the county government unless the problem was addressed.
