A photo of Ruto buying roasted maize went viral earlier this weak.
The controversy around the seemingly genuine photo has only deepened.
A man seen with a hood selling the maize to the second-in-command is allegedly a policeman according to social media chatter.
Here is how Garissa residents have been reacting to the new twist:
"The man in the suit and the man roasting maize look alike. Have we been played here," Abdihakim Balo said.
"I am still struggling to find any resemblance between the two people in the two photos," Karim Latif said.
"I think this are just Ruto enemies spreading mindless propaganda," Khalif Osman said.
"There could be truth in what is being propagated on social media. Only Ruto can tell us the truth," Omar Galgalo said.
"If that's the case, then it's unfortunate. It was surely done without the DP's knowledge," Bakar Walid said.
"Is this PR gone awry," Hussein Abad said.
