Most of them were already tucked away in their beds when the news came through.

Speaking to Hivisasa, Garissa residents expressed their condolences to the families of the victims of the tragedy and called on the government to put in place measures to prevent the recurrence of the shocking incident.

Here are some of the reactions from Garissa residents:

''My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. We are as shocked as other Kenyans,'' Abdulahi Karim said.

''We would like to see the owner of the dam and the engineers who oversaw its construction prosecuted. There is every reason to believe that the dam suffered from serious integrity flaws. Otherwise, it would not have crumbled,'' Shukre Dumo said.

''My heart beat very fast when I got the news. I pray to Allah to give the family of the victims the strength to bear this,'' Saloh Luke said.

''I am angry because the authorities could not prevent this from happening. This could have been prevented,'' Abdihakim Rahim said.

''My hope is that investigations will culminate in the prosecution of those responsible for this tragedy,'' Bulo Aman said.
