Human rights activists have reported that a total of 1,208 children were defiled in Kisumu for the last 15 months.
The reports released at St Stephens ACK Church in Kisumu County revealed that at least five of the victims were living with disabilities.
Among the human rights activists who addressed the media were, Ms Maureen Kemunto of Transform Empowerment for African and Mr Francis Auma of Swift Action at Haki Africa.
Kemunto noted that from the reports gathered, police had failed to deliver as expected of them when dealing with defilement and rape cases.
“The report revealed that identification of culprits, lack of confidentiality in handling cases, loss of file and poor response to distress calls by police impacted negatively on the fight against the vice,” Said Ms Kemunto as quoted by Daily Nation.
Kemunto further noted that the highest number of assault was reported during and after the 2017 general election.
Francis of Haki Africa noted that the government has not compensated victims of the 2017 post-election violence and asked for swift action from the relevant authorities on compensation.
A summary of the cases reported during the said period indicated that 182 related to burglary, 98 to homicide, 299 to robbery, 61 to assault and 177 to drugs.
